Why Malmö?
Between March and June, I'm living abroad with my wife Rebecca Lewis! Rebecca is a professor at the University of Oregon, specializing in land use, growth management and housing affordability. Every seven years professors are eligible for a research sabbatical, with the intention of immersing yourself in your field of research and getting away from the daily hustle. Rebecca is working with Magnus Andersson, a professor at Malmö University, on land use and housing topics.
I chose to accompany Rebecca for the duration of the trip and take a leave of absence from my work at Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments (OCWCOG, or "aqua-cog"). At Cascades West, I manage Transportation Programs, including the Albany Area MPO, Corvallis Area MPO, Cascades West Area Commission on Transportation, Cascades West Transportation Options, and the Linn Benton Loop, in addition to completing short and long range transportation planning projects. Naturally, I thought there was a lot I could learn about transportation from living in Sweden for 3 months! My hope is to bring back lessons learned, best practices, and a fresh perspective to my work in the region.
In June, Rebecca and I will be co-teaching a Bicycle Study Abroad course through the University of Oregon for 28 days. I attended as a professional in 2019 (some may remember my CAMPO 2 COPENHAGEN blog), and this time I'll be working as the liaison with five transportation professionals across Oregon, in addition to helping Rebecca with seventeen undergraduate and graduate students! The class is an immersive experience in Danish and Dutch life via exploring their transport systems hands on and meeting with local city staff, elected officials, and private professionals. More details on our trip are outlined below!
P.S. I'll also be sharing about baking adventures, coffee explorations, and Swedish pastries!
